Hidden Costs in Moving: 9 Charges to Check Before You Pay

Checklist of hidden costs in moving to check in a packers and movers quote before paying

The most common hidden costs in moving are packing materials, GST, tolls, transit insurance, extra floors or long carries, unpacking and furniture assembly, storage after a free period, and peak-date surcharges. Ask for each as a separate line in a written quote, so the total you approve is the total you pay.

This guide lists all nine, shows what Multishift's published 2026 rates say about each, and works through a cost example for Mumbai and intercity moves.

What are the most common hidden costs in moving?

Hidden costs are real charges that are missing from the headline price. In India the usual ones are packing materials, GST, tolls, insurance, floor and carry charges, unpacking and assembly, storage and timing surcharges. The table shows each one, what to ask, and what Multishift's pricing page says.

How much can hidden costs add? A worked example

On Multishift's published rates, a local 2 BHK move in Mumbai starts at about ₹10,500 to ₹15,500, and optional insurance on ₹3 lakh of goods adds about ₹9,000 before GST and tolls. Intercity moves add truck and packing lines. The totals below are arithmetic from the pricing page, not a quote.

As of October 2026. Assumptions: 2 BHK home; insurance at 3% of an assumed declared value (₹3 lakh local, ₹4 lakh intercity); GST and tolls excluded because the pricing page gives no figure for them. The local table on the pricing page leaves its "Approx. Total" column blank, so local totals are the sum of its packing, labour and transport lines.

ScenarioBase linesOptional insurance at 3%Subtotal before GST and tolls
Local 2 BHK, Mumbai₹10,500 to ₹15,500 (packing ₹4,000 to ₹6,000, labour ₹3,500 to ₹5,500, transport ₹3,000 to ₹4,000)₹9,000 on ₹3,00,000₹19,500 to ₹24,500
Intercity 2 BHK, shared truck₹12,000 to ₹25,000 truck + ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 packing = ₹16,000 to ₹34,000₹12,000 on ₹4,00,000₹28,000 to ₹46,000
Intercity 2 BHK, dedicated truck₹20,000 to ₹38,000 truck + ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 packing = ₹24,000 to ₹47,000₹12,000 on ₹4,00,000₹36,000 to ₹59,000

The final charge is confirmed in a written quotation after a survey, and may vary with the volume of goods, building access, distance, moving date and prevailing fuel and toll costs.

In the two intercity rows, packing and optional insurance alone add ₹16,000 to ₹21,000 on top of the truck line. That is why a low headline figure tells you little until you know what it leaves out. Compare any quote with the full Multishift pricing page.

How do I check a moving quote for hidden costs?

Ask for an itemised written quote after a survey, then tick each line against the table above. A usable quote names the move date, floors and lifts at both ends, packing items, insurance, GST, tolls and exclusions. If any line says "as applicable" or "extra", ask for the number.

  • Get the quote after a survey, not only on a phone call, so the inventory matches your home.
  • Give access details up front: floor, lift, parking spot and distance from truck to door.
  • Confirm which packing materials are included and how they are counted.
  • Ask whether insurance is added, at what declared value, and request the policy copy.
  • Check the GSTIN on the invoice using the Search Taxpayer tool on the GST portal.
  • Agree the payment schedule in writing and pay by traceable methods.
  • Photograph valuables and keep a signed inventory.
  • Compare at least two itemised quotes line by line, not just the total.

Which hidden costs are specific to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune moves?

Access and timing drive most local extras: society lift slots, lanes too narrow for a full truck and slow corridors. Check floors and lifts at both addresses, get the society's written permission, and ask whether the crew must hand-carry to a smaller tempo, because each can change the labour and vehicle lines.

  • Society permission. Most societies want a written request a few working days ahead. Generate yours with our society NOC letter tool, and ask your society office whether it charges any fee or deposit for moving in or out, and check what a society can legally charge.
  • Narrow access. Hill sectors and lanes can stop a full truck from reaching the door. See packers and movers in Kharghar for local access notes.
  • Busy corridors. In Vashi, ask how the crew schedules around market traffic, because waiting with a loaded truck is a cost risk.
  • Long distance. On a Mumbai to Pune move, decide between shared and dedicated truck early, as the table above shows the difference.

What if an extra charge appears on moving day?

Ask for the charge in writing with the reason and compare it with your written quote. If you decide to pay so the move can continue, note "paid under protest" on the receipt. Afterwards you can raise a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or at consumerhelpline.gov.in.

If goods are damaged instead, follow the steps in our guide to a packers and movers damage claim. Transit cover is explained on our goods transit insurance page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are GST and taxes included in packers and movers quotes?

Not always. Multishift's pricing page lists GST and government levies as additional, so ask whether a quoted price is with or without GST. Check that the invoice shows the supplier's GSTIN, which you can look up on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer tool, and the rate charged.

Is a packers and movers quote final?

Only if it is itemised, tied to a survey and states what is excluded. Multishift's pricing page says charges can rise with last-minute booking, peak season, a higher floor without a lift, long carry or special handling. Give access details before the quote and ask which lines can still change.

Is transit insurance compulsory when I hire packers and movers?

At Multishift it is optional and charged separately, typically about 3% of the declared value, so ₹3 lakh of goods costs about ₹9,000. Read the exclusions and the claim steps before you pay, and keep dated photos of valuable items.

Are packing materials included in the moving price?

It depends on the move. Multishift's local rates include a packing line, while intercity packing and materials are priced additionally. Always ask for the material list and whether cartons, bubble wrap and tape are counted per item or as a lump sum.

Do packers and movers charge for storage?

Storage is available on request, and Multishift's pricing page says charges apply after a free period. Ask how many free days you get, the rate after that, and whether insurance cover continues while your goods are in storage.

Should I tip the movers?

Tipping is voluntary. Multishift's pricing page does not list tips as a charge, so you decide based on the service. Ask the office before paying any amount that is not in your written quote, and tell the office if a crew asks for money.
