10 Things to Do Before Shifting to a New House
If you only have a few minutes, these are the tasks that cause the most trouble when they are missed. The planner above puts each one on the right date.
- Fix the moving date and give notice in writing.
- Compare two or three written quotes.
- Get society permission at both buildings.
- Clear out what you will not take.
- Arrange internet and LPG at the new address.
- Tell your bank, insurer and employer.
- Pack room by room and label every carton.
- Defrost the fridge and drain the washing machine.
- Keep documents, jewellery and medicines with you.
- Check and sign the inventory list at loading.

How to Use the Printable House Shifting Checklist
- Set your moving date. Every stage, from four weeks before to the first week after, shows the dates it covers for your move.
- Choose what applies. Tenant or owner, society flat or independent house, children, pets, a car or bike. Tasks that do not apply to you are hidden.
- Tick as you go. The stage you are in now is highlighted, and the bar at the top shows how much is done.
- Print it or save it as a PDF. The printable checklist works as a template: it carries your dates, shows every stage and leaves the boxes ready to tick by hand.

House Shifting Tips That Save Money and Damage
Move mid-month, mid-week
Month-end and weekends are the busiest days. A weekday in the middle of the month is easier to book and often cheaper. See the best time to move.
Reduce before you pack
The quote depends on volume. Every cupboard you clear before the survey makes the vehicle, the crew and the bill smaller.
Label by room, not by item
Write the destination room on two sides of every carton. Unloading goes faster and nothing ends up in the wrong room.
Get the quote in writing
Packing, labour, transport, tolls, GST and insurance should each be a separate line. The hidden costs guide lists nine charges to check.
Keep the inventory list
Sign it at loading and check it at delivery. It is the document any damage claim is checked against.
Pack one box for the first night
Bedsheets, towels, toiletries, a kettle and chargers in one clearly marked carton, loaded last so it comes off first.

What Not to Send on the Moving Truck
Keep with you
Documents, passports, property papers, jewellery, cash, medicines, laptops, hard drives and chargers.
Movers do not carry
Perishable food, gas cylinders that still hold gas, petrol, paint, and other flammable liquids.
Ask first
Plants on long routes, aquariums, pianos and very large artwork need special handling. Mention them at the survey.
