Address Change After Shifting in Mumbai: Electricity, Gas, Internet and Aadhaar
After shifting home in Mumbai, deal with services first and identity documents second. Arrange internet, gas and the electricity reading in the two weeks before the move. Then update your Aadhaar address, and use the updated Aadhaar to change the address with your bank, insurer, voter ID and vehicle papers.
The order matters because most organisations ask for an address proof, and an updated Aadhaar is the one they accept most readily. This guide covers who to contact in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, and where each request is made.
What should I change after shifting, and in what order?
Start with anything that needs a technician visit, because those take the longest. Finish with documents that only need an online form.
| When | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 2 weeks before | Internet shifting request | Your provider's app or customer care |
| 2 weeks before | Piped gas or LPG transfer | Mahanagar Gas, or your LPG distributor |
| Moving day | Electricity and water meter readings, with photos | Both homes |
| First week | Aadhaar address update | myAadhaar portal or an Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
| After Aadhaar | Bank, credit cards, insurance, mutual funds, employer | Net banking or branch |
| After Aadhaar | Voter ID, driving licence, vehicle RC | Voters' Service Portal, Parivahan |
| Any time | Delivery apps, subscriptions, newspaper, post | Each app or vendor |
Our house shifting checklist puts these on dates worked back from your moving day.
Who supplies electricity at my new address, and what do I need to do?
It depends on the area. Mumbai is served by more than one electricity company, and the first step is to read the name on the bill for your new flat.
| Area | Usual supplier |
|---|---|
| Island city, Colaba to Sion and Mahim | BEST Undertaking; Tata Power also serves some consumers |
| Western and eastern suburbs | Adani Electricity; Tata Power also serves some consumers |
| Bhandup, Mulund, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kalyan | MSEDCL (Mahavitaran) |
- If you are a tenant, the connection normally stays in the owner's name. Photograph the meter reading on the day you take possession and agree in writing who pays up to that reading.
- If you have bought the flat, apply for a change of name on the connection with your supplier. Each company has its own form and document list on its website, usually asking for ownership proof, ID and the previous owner's consent or a society letter.
- At the home you are leaving, take a final reading with a photo and settle the bill, so later units are not billed to you.
How do I transfer my gas connection to a new address?
Piped gas and cylinder gas work differently. A piped connection belongs to the flat and cannot be carried with you. An LPG cylinder connection belongs to you and can be transferred.
- Piped gas (Mahanagar Gas): at the old flat, ask for the supply to be closed in your name and settle the final bill. At the new flat, if a piped connection already exists, apply to have it put in your name or restarted. If there is none, apply for a new connection. Requests are made through Mahanagar Gas customer care or its website.
- LPG within the same city: ask your distributor for a transfer to the distributor serving your new area. You normally keep the cylinder and regulator.
- LPG to another city: the distributor issues a transfer or termination document, and you take that to a distributor in the new city to restart the connection. Ask your distributor what to return and what to carry, as the paperwork differs by case.
Carry your consumer number, ID and proof of the new address for any of these. Movers do not carry filled LPG cylinders in the truck, so plan this before moving day. Our kitchen packing guide covers the stove and cylinder on moving day.
How do I shift my WiFi connection to the new house?
Raise a shifting or relocation request with your provider before you move, through its app or customer care. The provider checks whether its network reaches the new building, then sends a technician to refit the connection.
- Ask about feasibility first. If your provider does not serve the new building, you will need a new connection from one that does, and that takes longer.
- Ask whether a shifting charge applies and whether your plan and remaining validity carry over.
- Photograph the back of the router and set-top box before unplugging, and carry them yourself, not in the truck.
- Check with the new society which providers are already wired into the building.
How do I change my address in Aadhaar after shifting?
Update it online on UIDAI's myAadhaar portal if your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar, or visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if it is not. You upload or show a document that carries your name and the new address, and UIDAI issues an update request number to track it.
UIDAI publishes the list of documents it accepts as proof of address and the current fee. Check that list before you apply, because it is revised from time to time. Tenants commonly use a registered leave and licence agreement; our guide to renting a flat in Mumbai explains how that agreement is registered.
Where else should I update my address?
- Bank and cards: most banks accept an address update through net banking or the app with the updated Aadhaar. Do this before your next statement or card delivery.
- Insurance and investments: health, life and motor insurers, mutual funds and your demat account each hold your address separately.
- Voter ID: apply on the Voters' Service Portal using the form for shifting of residence, so you are enrolled in the constituency you now live in.
- Driving licence and vehicle RC: apply for a change of address through the Parivahan portal. The Motor Vehicles Act expects the RC address to be updated within 30 days of moving.
- Passport: an address change means applying for a reissue through Passport Seva.
- Employer and tax: update HR records and your profile on the income tax e-filing portal.
- Everyday services: delivery and cab apps, newspaper, milk, courier accounts and school records.
What does the new society need from me?
Most Mumbai societies ask for a copy of the registered agreement or sale deed, ID proofs of everyone moving in, and the tenant information submitted to the police. Many also ask for advance notice of the shifting date so the service lift and truck parking can be booked.
You can create that notice with our free society shifting permission letter tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which should I update first after shifting, Aadhaar or the bank?
Aadhaar. Banks, insurers and most government portals accept an updated Aadhaar as address proof, so changing it first makes every later update simpler.
Can I take my Mahanagar Gas connection to my new flat?
No. A piped gas connection belongs to the flat. You close it in your name at the old address and apply for a transfer of name, a restart or a new connection at the new address.
Does the electricity connection change name when a tenant moves in?
Normally no. The connection stays in the owner's name and the tenant pays the bill. Take a dated photo of the meter reading on the day you move in and on the day you leave.
How long does it take to shift a broadband connection?
It depends on whether your provider already serves the new building. Raise the request about two weeks before the move so the feasibility check and the technician visit are done by the time you arrive.
Is a rent agreement accepted as address proof for Aadhaar?
UIDAI decides which documents are accepted and revises the list from time to time. Check the current list on the UIDAI website before applying; tenants commonly use a registered leave and licence agreement.
Will packers and movers carry my LPG cylinder?
Filled LPG cylinders are not carried in the truck with household goods for safety reasons. Arrange the transfer with your distributor before moving day.
